SEAWEED FRAGMENTS //

The Zeeland coast serves as an endless source of inspiration and tranquility for me.  Often, I retreat to its shores when the demands of life become overwhelming. During a walk along the Oosterschelde, I encountered a rich variety of edible seaweeds and shells washed ashore. This sparked the idea to create a series of close-up images, focusing on these edible treasures.

These images diverge from my usual work as I opted to capture the seaweeds from an extremly close perspective, emphasizing their textures. Employing direct light on the transparency of the seaweed resulted in vibrant and lively colors. Minimal post-processing was applied to these images, they were created in a single shot with the camera.

Reproductions of this series are printed on chromaluxe, a distinctive high-gloss medium that accentuates the vibrancy of the subject, allowing the vivid colors and intricate details of the seaweed to shine through.

In Yerseke, I had the pleasure of meeting Jan Kruijsse from ‘De Zeeuwse Zeewierhandel.’ As one of the few in the Netherlands licensed to harvest seaweed, Jan traverses the exposed shores of the Oosterschelde daily at low tide. Here, he gathers a diverse array of seaweeds, including red hornweed, sea lettuce, wireweed, Irish moss, Japanese berry seaweed, and during the season, wakame. Jan graciously shared insights and allowed me to taste some of these seaweeds raw, providing a truly unique flavor experience.

Renowned chefs from Belgium and the Netherlands specifically seek out Jan to procure these high-quality sea products for incorporation into their culinary creations
